A strong idea is a good start, what comes next can will make all the difference.

Let’s work together to take your scripted audio project from good to unforgettable. Whether you're developing an idea, shaping a script, or refining a production, I bring hands-on experience and story-first insight to every stage of the process.

With years in the independent podcast industry and nearly two decades of leadership experience, I understand the full life cycle of a production— because I’ve worn every hat. As the founder of Shadows at the Door Productions, I’ve written, produced, directed, and acted in a wide range of audio dramas, from chilling anthologies to roof-raising musical productions and intimate character pieces. I’m also a specialist in adapting prose to audio, with experience ranging from classic stories to modern screenwriters like Jamie Flanagan.

I’ve also led talent development programmes such as New Writing North’s Sounds Good: Audio Storytelling, delivered in partnership with Creative UK and Northumbria University. I led writers through every stage of development of Audio Drama from concept to a fully produced pilot, combining classroom teaching, studio work, and one-to-one mentorship.

Whether you need help developing an idea, refining a script, or guiding a full production, I can support your project at any stage. I work with individuals, teams, and organisations to bring stories to life in a way that’s collaborative, thoughtful, and tailored to your goals. My rates are flexible— I believe in supporting all creatives no matter what stage of their journey they’re at— and I’m always excited to help great ideas grow. If that sounds like what you need, just drop me a message below— I’d love to hear about your project!

“The best part of working with someone is when the penny drops— not just that they understand, but that it changes how they tell their story from here on out.”

What People Are Saying

“Mark Nixon is a patient and perceptive mentor who thoroughly understands the audio storytelling context and is able to convey this in gently challenging ways that not only enable the enhancement of the current work in progress but also embed principles and methods to carry forward into future audio writing projects. I cannot recommend Mark highly enough.”

— Susannah Ronnie

“Mark’s guidance and expert knowledge during my time on his course was so indispensable. I could not recommend him enough as a mentor! He always makes time to share knowledge and any industry insights/opportunities he finds and is a brilliant asset to the podcasting world! Mark always shows a friendly but assured attitude when helping with projects, using his extensive experience to ensure everything is well-written /edited but holding firm when he believes something is finished (as some of us are over thinkers and could keep going on every project!) I couldn’t have produced my work to the standard I did without Mark’s support!”

— Libby Harris

Mark Nixon is a writer and director of enormous compassion - whose sensitivity, nuance and control of emotional range comes through in everything he makes. As a sound designer, Mark is a master of creating and releasing tension in subtle, clear, cleanly edited episodes. Mark is an asset to any project he works on - not only for his technical and creative skill, but also for his unique and insightful perspective.
