Shadows at the Door Productions is a distinctive and celebrated indie production house run by Mark Nixon. What began as a simple hobby and a desire to share stories soon grew into an audio drama podcast that quickly gained recognition for its professional production values and creative ambition. With Mark at the helm as producer, lead writer, and director, Shadows at the Door became known for its immersive sound design, emotional depth, and narrative variety.

Now hosted on the Realm podcast network, Shadows at the Door has built a reputation for bold, atmospheric horror storytelling within a one-of-a-kind format. Each episode contains a self-contained story— often an original story or a bold adaptation of classic literature, such as the acclaimed miniseries The Picture of Dorian Gray— followed by an engaging post-story discussion. This unique structure, paired with high production standards, has attracted talent from across the industry, including Rahul Kohli (Midnight Mass), Sacha Dhawan (Doctor Who), and Jeppe Beck Laursen (The Last Kingdom).

A haunting tale set in occupied Norway during WWII, The Tides of Men blends supernatural horror with historical drama. Recorded in Oslo, this standout episode showcases Shadows at the Door’s commitment to immersive, location-rooted storytelling.

The Tides of Men

Proudly based in the North East of England, Shadows at the Door Productions is committed to representation and storytelling that reflects a wide range of lived experiences. SatD Productions frequently creates queer stories, has begun to explore narratives involving disability, all while consulting on sensitive topics to ensure authenticity and respect. Now, a growing focus is being placed on amplifying underrepresented north eastern voices within the UK’s audio landscape.

In 2025, Shadows at the Door Productions released the critically acclaimed audio drama musical Earworm, crowdfunded through Kickstarter and praised for its originality and emotional resonance. Much of the production house’s ongoing work is made possible by a dedicated Patreon community. In 2023, Nixon was honoured with an Audio Verse Award for Best Director, recognising his work on Season Three of Shadows at the Door.

Shadows at the Door Productions only continues to grow in ambition, scope, and impact.

“The scariest, most beautiful things in audio drama isn’t always what we say-- it’s what the audience projects between the lines. With the right silence, the right hesitation... The audience does the rest.”
